The Mettur Dam is located in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. It is the largest dam in Tamil Nadu. This dam is built on the Kaveri River. This dam is a part of Mettur Hydroelectric Project. The height of this dam is 214 feet and width is 171 feet.  Its length is 1700 meters.

This dam was completed in 1934. At that time it was named Stanley Reservoir.   It is named after Lieutenant Colonel Sir George Frederick Stanley, who served the Governor of Madras from 1929 to 1934 and as Acting Viceroy of India in 1934.

This dam provides irrigation and drinking water facilities for more than 12 districts of Tamil Nadu, hence this dam is reputed as a lifesaving structure in Tamil Nadu.
