The ancient Assam was ruled by several dynasties. In the early 350 CE to mid-12 CE the region was named as Kamarupa or Pragjyotishpur.

It is also called the first historical kingdom of Assam.

Kamarupa covered the regions like north Bengal, Brahmaputra Valley, Bhutan, North Bangladesh and some parts of Bihar and West Bengal.
