Columbus named this 'Christmas Port', as it was built on Christmas Eve, 1492, but when he returned a year later found it destroyed. The oldest continually-inhabited European settlement in Latin America is Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, established in 1496 by Columbus' younger brother.
