Kalidasa was an Indian scholar, poet and dramatist who lived around 4th or 5th century CE, during the Gupta era. Popularly known as Indian Shakespeare.

Friedrich Max Muller was a German born philologist and orientalist, interested in studying the Vedas and other Sanskrit works.  

Comparing Kalidasa’s writings with those of the Persians, Greeks and Europeans, and by the same firm canons of criticism, Max Muller asserts that, Poet Kalidasa's plays are not superior to many plays that resting in dust and peace on the shelves of libraries.
