Answer:

in CHCl3,

oxidation number of chlorine=-1

Cl3=3(-1)=-3

oxidation number of hydrogen when it reacts with non-metals=+1

therefore, C+1+(-3)=0

C+1-3=0

C-2=0

C=2

since,oxidation number of carbon in this compound is 2

In C2Cl6,

oxidation number of chlorine is -1

therefore, oxidation number of Cl6=6(-1)=-6

therefore, C2+(-6)=0

C2-6=0

C2=6

therefore,C2=6

then,C=6/2=3

since oxidation number of carbon in this compound is 3
