we know that oxidation number of hydrogen is +1 and of oxygen is -2 exept in peroxides and super oxides. So let us assume the oxidation number of chlorine is 'x' in hclo3.
(+1)+'x'+3(-2)=0
⇒+1+'x'+(-6)=0
⇒+1+'x'-6=0
⇒+1+'x'=+6
⇒'x'=+6-1
⇒'x'=+5
(+1)+'x'+3(-2)=0
⇒+1+'x'+(-6)=0
⇒+1+'x'-6=0
⇒+1+'x'=+6
⇒'x'=+6-1
⇒'x'=+5
