The oxidation number of chlorine in given chemical compound is +5

Explanation:

Oxidation number is the number that is given to an atom when it looses or gains electron. It is written as a superscript.

A positive oxidation number is obtained, when an element looses electrons and a negative oxidation number is obtained, when an element gains electrons.

We are given a chemical compound having formula of KClO_3

Let us take the oxidation number of chlorine be 'x'

We know that:

Oxidation number of potassium = +1

Oxidation number of oxygen = -2

Evaluating the oxidation number of chlorine, we get:

\Rightarrow +1+x+(3\times (-2))=0\\\\\Rightarrow x=+6-1=+5
