Ammonia is a neutral compound. But when we find oxidising state of ammonia that is NH3 then we put nitrogen for -3 and hydrogen for +1 I.e.
-3+3*(+1)=-3+3=0
As we know that nitrogen has capacity of accepting 3 electrons ,that's why we put nitrogen for -3 and hydrogen has the capacity of donating 1 electron ,that's why we put Hydrogen for +1
