Norms for water supply is suggested by the Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation (CPHEEO). However, the norms differ according the classification of towns/cities in urban india. The recommended norms are as follows:
1. Towns with piped water supply but without sewerage system:70 lpcd
2. Cities with piped water supply where sewerage system is existing/ contemplated: 135 lpcd
3. Metropolitan and Mega cities with piped water supply where sewerage system is existing/ contemplated: 150 lpcd
