1. Alluvial soils cover about 45.6 percent of the total area of the country.

2. Alluvial soils are also called as depositional soils because they are transported and deposited by rivers and streams.

3. They are widespread in the northern plains i.e. Indo Gangetic plain starting fr Punjab in the west to West Bengal and Assam in the East.

4. Alluvial soils vary in nature from sandy loam to clay.

5. They are generally rich in potash and poor in phosphorus.

6. In the Upper and Middle Ganga plain, two different types of alluvial soils have developed. They are Khadar,it is the new alluvium deposited by floods annually and Bhangar, it is the older alluvium deposited away from the flood plain.
