Both perigee and apogee refers to the distances to the moon from the earth. Since the orbit of the moon around the earth is elliptical, one side of the moon is nearer to the earth than the other. The point nearest to the earth is known as perigee and the moon looks really large. In contrast, the farthest point from the earth is called apogee and the moon looks really small.

When a full moon or new moon occurs near the perigee or apogee of the moon, it is called supermoon or micromoon respectively.
