When we exhale, the composition of the air remains almost the same as the air we inhale, only the percentage of carbon dioxide and oxygen changes. The amount of inhaled air contains 21% of oxygen and 0.04% of carbon dioxide, while the air we breathe out contains 16.4% of oxygen and 4.4% of carbon dioxide.

Inhalation:

When you inhale (breathe in), air enters your lungs and oxygen from the air moves from your lungs to your blood.

Exhalation:

At the same time, carbon dioxide,  a waste gas, moves from your blood to the lungs and is exhaled ( breath out). This process is called gas exchange and is essential to life.

Gas exchange:

Gas exchange takes place by diffusion in the alveoli within the lungs. As a result composition of inhaled and exhaled air is different.
