Peristalsis is the rhythmic movement of muscles of the alimentary canal to push food through the track for digestion and absorption. This movements occur due to the length - wise and breadth - wise contraction of the Circular and Longitudinal layers of the Muscularis layer of the alimentary canal.

Peristaltic movement of digestive system helps the food to movedownwards from mouth to the stomach through oesophagus. Itmoves the food in a wave like manner by a rhythmic contraction and relaxation of the muscles present in the walls of oesophagus.
