Scientifically negative temperature is meaningless because temperature is just the another way of saying about the kinetic energy( k.e.) of molecules. Higher the k.e. higher the temperature, lower the k.e., lower the temperature, (only in Kelvin), zero the k.e. zero the temperature = 0 K = -273 °C.
But, if we take it in the human sense, we feel hot and cold. To express something is hot we may say it is 50°C, To say that Ice is too cold, we may say temperature of ice is -15°C. So Negative temperature in Fahrenheit and Celsius only say about our feeling of Cold.
-5°C is not opposite of +5°C scientifically, it can be understood that -5°C have less heat energy as compared to +5°C. Opposite of hot is cold but opposite of heat does not exist. What we actually do in a fridge, we don't make the temperature cold, we just take out some heat, as a result temperature becomes low. From where does the temperature of earth is maintained to be roughly 15°C, Yes from the sun. That means sun gives us heat energy. If there would be no sun, then what would happen to earth, temperature would fall down and come to 0 K. That means without the presence of heat temperature falls. That means Cold scientifically is nothing just like darkness is nothing.
