By analogy with waves such as sound wave shi may the thought of as an amplitude of the particle wave i. e. de Broglie wave although such wave amplitude has no physical significance.
The square of shi, however, does have physical significance : the probability of finding a particle described by a specific wave function shi at a given point of time is given by shi square.
