It is useful from a standpoint of determining boundaries between countries. However, it is and has always been pointless for the common folk.

War is simply an arena for the gods of war to be entertained. Unfortunately, as humans are tribal beings, war is often a necessity. It's a terrible and horrific price to pay, but it's one that has been paid for millennia. War is sometimes pointless, sometimes profoundly appropriate.
