Where both the central government and the provincial or state governments have the power to create laws in relation to the same matters, the laws of one government will be given priority over the other through the doctrine.

  • Warren Hastings, the first governor general (1813-1823) initiated the policy of paramountcy.
  • the British made false claims that the company's authority was paramount or supreme than that of Indian states. on this ground,in order to protect its interests it was justified in annexing or threatening to annex any Indian Kingdom.
