The work that a noun performs in a sentence is referred to as its grammatical function;

A noun can perform any of the following five functions:

• Subject of a verb

• Object of a verb

• Complement of a verb

• Object of a preposition

• Be in opposition to another noun.

1. Subject

A subject is followed by verb.

Examples:

– Makara sang a song at the wedding.

– The house is very nice.

Function of nouns : Function of noun is to describe or display a person, place, animal , thing or emotion.

For example :

1) Anil is a boy.

Here Anil is a name of person so Anil is a noun.

2) We went to Agra last year.

Here Agra is a name of a place. So, Agra is a noun.

3)The tiger chased the deer .

Here tiger and deer are the nouns because they are animals .

4) Give me that pen.

Here pen is a noun because it is a thing .

5) I am so happy today.

Here happy is noun because it is representing happiness which is a emotion . And emotions are nouns.

Position of nouns : Nouns can be used directly or indirectly .

1) Even as a subject.

2) Also as a object.
