What is the position of women in india compared with other country?
Answers
It clearly depends on the countries you're comparing India to. Let us divide countries on the basis of Developed nations, Nations that follow sharia law and Nations that are somehow less developed than India
Developed Nations: It would be wrong to say that the developed nations have no crime against women. Shockingly enough, countries like Canada too have a high 'recorded' crime rate against women. But then, recorded instances are not a true reflection of the society. Recorded crimes only mean that the police is more supportive and it is easier for a woman to try and seek justice from the caretakers of law. And this is rather a great thing. Women in developed nations often tend to victimize men also. The feminism there has taken a wrong turn by becoming female chauvinism. Women are openly following their sexuality and living the lives of their choice. So, basically, such nations are the best for women to be in.
Sharia law nations: Predominantly, the middle east countries follow Sharia Law. I lived in Egypt for some time and I was petrified because there are almost no rights against Sexual Violence against women. I wanted to ride a bicycle on my way to the NGO i worked with there, and my very concerned Egyptian friend told me it was a very 'bad idea'. If a woman is ever raped, all of us know what happens to the rapist and many support that but not many of us know that a woman has to literally prove that she was raped. How, you ask? Well, if the criminal confesses (Why would he?) or if six adult men report as eye-witnesses to the rape (Rape in public are we talking about?). Yes. Only if one or both of these two things happen, the woman is considered raped. (Ref: Case of European woman in prison in Saudi Arabia for complaining of molestation) Else, it's considered sex outside of marriage and various unspeakable things happen which may be prison, pelting with stones to death or something more scary. So, it's not a happy place to be in unless you have men protecting you. And that's tough because the society is such that you need a man's protection to save yourself.
Less developed nations: Now there's a lot of variety in the way women are treated. For example, an innocent little girl is given the throne of a religious goddess in Nepal and when she gains puberty, she is striped off of all her rights and she leads a life of lonliness (Ref: Taboo, Nat Geo). It may also be like a woman rising up to be the leader of a society in Bangladesh. But it's diverse. Also, these nations have other matters to be dealt with like food insecurity, for example. So, women empowerment is a relatively not so big thing here. However, women lead a fairly okay life.
I hope this answers your question. :)
