Mitochondria is called the power house of the cell because it is responsible for production of energy in cell. During the cellular respiration , the energy is stored in the form of ATP.

When the cell needs more energy, the mitochondria can reproduce by growing larger and then dividing.

If the cell needs less energy, some mitochondria will die or become inactive.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION :-

Mitochondria is the double membranous cell organelle.

It is absent in prokaryotes.

The inner layers are tightly folded to form structures called cristae.

Other functions of Mitochondria -

\longrightarrowCellular metabolism

\longrightarrowProducing heat in the body

\longrightarrowControlling the concentration of calcium

\longrightarrowProducing specific steroids.
