Imbibition is a special type of diffusion that takes place when water is adsorbed by solids-colloids causing an increase in volume. Examples include the absorption of water by seeds[1] and dry wood. If it were not for the pressure due to imbibition, seedlings would not be able to emerge from soil.

Imbibition is a type of diffusion where the water is absorbed by the solid particles called colloids, without forming a solution causing an enormous increase in volume. To define, the absorption of water by hydrophilic colloids is known as imbibition. Process of Imbibition.
