Generally speaking human rights situation in Nepal is good. We have a new constitution that guarantees freedom of speech, assembly among various other things. We have a very vibrant media that is often critical of the govt, protests are common although some are violent.

- Generally speaking human rights situation in Nepal is good. We have a new constitution that guarantees freedom of speech, assembly among various other things. We have a very vibrant media that is often critical of the govt, protests are common although some are violent.
- Nepal was mired in a 10 year civil war that cost around 17000 lives and we have a TRC to help find justice for the victims and also reconciliation. Have to say that it's looking less likely that victims will get justice and that's a problem. We have a PM now who is a Maoist and he will do everything to stall work of TRC.
- There is some issue of excessive force used by police during last year's protests and sometimes heavy handed response to protests in various places. But important to remember policeman were attacked last time but change and accountability needed.
- All in all, human rights situation is good but not perfect. Of course no comparison between Nepal and other dictatorial countries. Nobody in Nepal can be arrested without a warrant and indefinitely detained partly because we have Supreme Court who can issue habeus corpus.
