Arikamedu is now an archaelogical site which is present few miles south of the southeastern Indian city of Pondicherry, at present situated in Kakkayanthope.

Explanation:

  • To date, it is the earliest known Indo-Pacific bead making site.  The name Arikamedu is the archaeological term for the site.
  • It is derived from the Tamil word, meaning "mound of Arukan" because a statuette of an avatar of Mahavir was found there.
  • Virampatnam is the village adjoining the site of Arikamedu to this day.
