Given :

Diameter of the cylinder = 28 cm

Mass of mercury = 30.8 g

Density of mercury = 13.66 g/cc

To Find :

The pressure and thrust on the bottom of the vessel

Solution :

  • Pressure at the bottom of the tank is given by

           P = ρgh

           P = 13.6 × 9.8 × 28

           P = 3731.84 dyne-cm⁻²

  • Surface area at the bottom of the tank = π(r)² = π(28)² = 2463 cm²
  • The thrust acting at the bottom of the tank is

          Thrust = Force × Area

          Thrust =  3731.84 × 2463

          Thrust = 92.02 N

   The pressure at the bottom of the tank is 3731.84 dyne-cm⁻².

   The thrust on the bottom of the tank is 92.02 N.
