The primary component of an exhaled breath has to be CO₂.
- The partial pressure of CO₂ at the tissue level is more than in blood therefore the CO₂ diffuses from tissue to blood at the tissue level.
- Then at the alveolar level the partial pressure of CO₂ in alveoli is less than that in blood so the blood diffuses from the blood into the alveoli and from the alveoli the CO₂ ultimately gets exhales out of the body.
- In fact CO₂ is the gas which causes the urge to exhale .
