Penicillin is a bacterial cell wall inhibitor. The mechanism of action is described in explanation.

Explanation:

  • Penicillin is a bactericidal drug or antibiotic that inhibit cell wall synthesis and kill the bacteria
  • beta-lactam ring of penicillin bind with the penicillin binding protein (PBP)present on the cell surface of bacteria.
  • One of the penicillin binding protein is transpeptidase enzyme. binding of penicillin to transpeptidase causes  inhibition of trans peptidase catalyzed reaction i.e. formation of crosslinking between peptidoglycan chains that is essential for cell wall integrity and prevention of new cell wall synthesis.
  • This result in formation of weak bacterial cell wall and bacteria undergo autolysis and die.
