In certain conditions you have experienced that you can hear your own reflected sound (as a second sound).If you shout “HELLO” the sound may bounce back at you from a large object.You hear your own voice coming back, called Echo.Sonar are electronic devices that use the principle of an echo to detect and locate object. Sonar uses the echo principle by sending out sound wave under water or through human body to locate objects.Sound Waves are a type of acoustic energy.

Sonar works by emitting a sound wave that when hit by a object reflects back to the source. The difference in time taken by the original wave to be sent with the time taken to the sound reflected to be received helps in calculating the distance of an object.

They are mainly used by ships and some animals such as bats (animals use it in the form called echolocation)
