The vernier scale works on the principle of using alignment of line segments displaced by a small amount to make fine measurements. Human eye can easily detect this alignment of lines which is the main fact that drives a vernier.

♠ ANSWER:

❇ VERNIER CALLIPERS Is a device used to measure accurately up to 1/10th of a millimetre. It was designed by ❇️ PIERRE VERNIER ❇️

Vernier Callipers comprises of two scales, VEENIER SCALE ( V) and MAIN SCALE ( S. ). The main scale is fixed but the vernier scale, which is also called auxiliary scale is movable.

❇ PRINCIPLE :

Suppose the size of one man scale is S units and that of one vernier scale division is V units.
Also suppose that the length interval of M vernier scale divisions is equal to the length interval of (m-1) main scale divisions Therefore the length of ( m - 1 ) main scale divisions = length of M vernier scale divisions.

SYMBOLICALLY,

( m- 1) S = mV
m S - S = m V
m ( S - V) = S
( S - V ) = S / m

This (S - V) quantity is called VERNIER CONSTANT (V. C.).

The smallest value of a physical quantity which can be measured accurately with an instrument is called LEAST COUNT (L. C..)
