Cyanobacteria are nitrogen fixing bacteria. They do this by a structure called heterocyst present in them. This nitrogen in turn is good for plants and thus they can be used as a bio-fertilizer .

Cyanobacteria has heterocyst which helps in nitrogen fixation. Atmospheric nitrogen cannot be used by the plants in gaseous form, they should be converted to usable forms like nitrates and nitrites. These cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae has convert atmospheric nitrogen into usable form and thus enrich the soil with nitrate and nitrite. Therefore they are used for crop improvement.
