Tandem repeats occur in DNA when a pattern of nucleotides is repeated. The repeats sit next to each other, in tandem. These are multiple copies of the same base-pair sequence lying end-to-end." From Simple english wikipedia.
Example- ATGC ATGC ATGC.....ATGC.
Now the number of times this pattern repeats is variable(can take up any value; x) thus it is called Variable number tandem repeats.
Now, if x=2 then this pattern is called Dinucleotide tandem repeat. If x=3 then it is trinucleotide tandem repeat... Simple stuff.
