James Mill divided Indian history based on religious perspective. As he collected evidence he found that in old time India was ruled by Hindu rulers and after that Muslim rulers and his time British was ruling. So he divided the Indian history into tree parts - Hindu history, Muslim history and British history

After that so many problems were created because there are more religions. So then he ignored all the diversities and divided it on the base of religion and called his period as Modern history or British history
