What is the process by which living organisms get energy from their food?

During a process called respiration, we react these substrates with oxygen to give carbon dioxide and water; this takes place in the mitochondria of our cells. Hence the living organisms get energy from their food through respiration...

For example: green plants produce their own foodfrom a process called photosynthesis. They use the chloroplasts in their cells to capture energy in sunlight. They combine it with water and carbon dioxide from the air to produce sugars for themselves. Green plants are therefore known as producers or autotrophs.
