As there was no printing presses before 1750, scribes used to copy down the manuscripts which were hand-written, Sometimes it was difficult to recognize the original script. So the scribes used their own way of interpreting the facts.

Drawbacks:

Manuscripts could not satisfy the everincreasing demand for books. Copying was an expensive, laborious and time-consuming business. Manuscripts were fragile, awkward to handle and could not be carried around easily as they were big and heavy.
