What is the cause of Hiccups?

  • Hiccups occur when you eat something we know that our salivary amylase softens our food which is followed by crushing of food by teeth.
  • Now, we also know that food enters the oesophagus or food pipe.
  • During this process, there is a flap like structure called epi glottis.
  • This epiglottis recieves both air from nasal passage and the bolus from our mouth.

During this process:-

  • Sometimes the bolus of the food enters our wind pipe.
  • To remove this food, hiccups are originated, so that the bolus can go on the right track ie the food pipe.
