Lightning occurs when charges in the clouds strike each other. We know that like charges repel and unlike charges attract and we also know that everything in this world is made up of matter which is in turn made up atoms.
Now, every atom has a proton(+ charge) and electron(- charge). When two surfaces strike or rub each other, due to the force electron from one substance swifts to the other substance which results that one substance becomes negatively charged and the other substance positively charged.
When this takes place, a spark or light can be seen by us. Sometimes we can also ear a crackling sound.
This same phenomenon happens during lightning. Two clouds rub against each other which results in both the clouds getting charged and during this process big sparks flew out which are called lightning and sound is heard which is thunder.
