The Rajya Sabha held its first sitting on 13 May 1952. The salary and other benefits for a member of Rajya Sabha are same as for a member of LokSabha. Rajya Sabha members are elected by state legislatures rather than directly through the electorate by single transferable vote method.

The President of India nominates 12 peoples to the Rajya Sabha. These are eminent Persons From the Field of literature, Science, Arts and Social Services. These are nominated For six years with a provisions that one-third should retire after every two years.
# Elected Members
In the Rajya Sabha, there are 238 members who represent 289 states and the Union Territories including Delhi. Seats are allotted to them on the Basis of their Population.
For Example --- Uttar Pradesh with a Population of Nearly 6 crores represents 31 members in the Rajya Sabha., which is the Largest.
For these 238 Members, Elections of the Rajya Sabha held.
Methods of the Election---
The members of the Rajya Sabha from each state are elected by the Elected members of the Legislative assembly (i.e., the lower house of the State Legislature) by means of Proportional Representation through Single Transferable Vote system and Open Ballot.
The representatives of the Union Territories are chosen in such an manner as may be decided or Prescribed by the Parliament From time to time.The Parliament did away with the Domicile Criterion.
The Rajya Sabha actually Consist of the 245 Members, of whom 233 elected and 12 are nominated by the President.
The terms of the the elected member is also six years with a provision that one-third should retire after every 2 years.
