When 1-nitroethene (  CH_{2}=CH-NO_{2} ) is reacted with hydrogen bromide ( HBr ) , the product formed is BrCH_{2}-CH_{2}-NO_{2} .

   CH_{2}=CH-NO_{2} + HBr  →  BrCH_{2}-CH_{2}-NO_{2}

  • This reaction does not follow Markovnikov addition .
  • Due to the presence of the nitro group , the positive charge is developed on the second carbon . So , the Bromide anion goes for the second carbon and the hydrogen cation goes for the first carbon attached to the nitro group .
