Former president APJ Abdul Kalam’s aide Srijan Pal Singh on Friday announced the launch of Kalam libraries in Madhya Pradesh – after successfully running them in two dozen cities in the country – to help the poor and needy students get free access to the books.
“Kalam sir always wanted every child of the nation to be educated and to get access to books. Opening libraries is a step towards fulfilling his dream,” Singh, who worked as an advisor and officer on special duty (OSD) to the late president, told a press conference in the state capital.
“The mission KLP (Kalam Library Project) was started in January 2016 and is running successfully in 24 cities of Delhi, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan, and now we have come to Madhya Pradesh,” he said.
Singh, who is also an author and social entrepreneur, worked with the ‘Missile Man’ in promoting various assignments such as ‘What Can I Give’ movement, energy independence for the nation, nuclear and space missions and providing urban amenities to rural areas. He also co-authored the bestseller Target 3 Billion with Kalam.
The KLP, in Madhya Pradesh, will expand its mission in collaboration with Vishleshan Educational and Social Welfare Society, and aims to reach 3 lakh children in the state in the next three months. However, it is still unclear how many such libraries will be set up.

Deepak Motwani of Vishleshan said, “Kalam Library Mission will mark its beginning in MP from Bhopal and for the same, work has already started. We have already started receiving book donations and we seek support from big renowned schools, students, parents, retired officials and social workers.”
Singh, reminiscing about his early association with Kalam, said, “I was a student of Dr Kalam in IIM Ahmedabad. We students used to hold classes during our free time for slum dwelling children in our college. Dr Kalam used to often visit us and show his concern that every child needs to be educated. This whole idea of library stemmed from this thought.”
