The forward characteristics of the zener diode are identical to the PN junction diode. In forward bias, the zener diode starts conducting when the forward voltage is more than the cut-in voltage of the diode. The voltage drop across the diode is 0.7 Volt.
When the reverse bias voltage is greater than a predetermined voltage then the Zener breakdown occurs. The breakdown means the zener diode starts conducting in the reverse biased condition. The zener diodes are available in different voltage rating i.e. 3.3V,5.1 V,7.2V,12V etc. If the voltage is further increased the zener current starts increasing, maintaining the constant output voltage. The zener diode is used as a voltage regulator.
