In a presidential system, the president is not only head of state, but head of government by leading an executive branch separated from the legislature. A parliamentary system has a head of government separate from the head of state who leads of government whose existence depends on the confidence of the parliament. The government ministers are often also members of the parliament. There is a mixed version called semi-presidential, which shares qualities of both.
