What is the purpose of ammonia in cascade system for manufacture of dry ice?

As a mean of mitigating the CO 2 concentration in the air, a new dry ice cycle with topping ammonia cascade refrigeration was devised and analyzed. In order to reduce compression power and the exergy loss in the dry ice production cycle, two heat exchangers were inserted in the cycle. Through simulation, the trends of compression power and irreversibility from the exergy analysis were examined in terms of two intermediate pressures, CO 2 condenser pressure, and degrees of subcooling in the inlets of expansion valves.
