Constructed in 1639 by the fifth Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as the palace of his fortified capital Shahjahanabad, the Red Fort is named for its massive enclosing walls of red sandstone and is adjacent to the older Salimgarh Fort, built by Islam Shah Suri in 1546 AD.

Here is your answer

The aim behind the construction of Red Fort was to treat it as a palace when the 'capital of India' was shifted from Agra to that of Delhi. The preliminary structure was constructed by Shah Suri, which was eventually taken up and made more regal by Shah Jahan.
