The main purpose of media is to do the following :-

Objectivity of the content - Present content in a fair, nonpartisan and factual format without being overtly partial.

Engaging and facilitating public debate through critical analysis of social issues

Asking right pointed questions at right time and further delving into the depths of certain questions to give subjective analysis.

Sadly most of the media houses are not following the basic tenets of the profession. The key word these days is to sensationalize news content for increasing viewership by appealing to emotions of audience and thereby increasing the ad revenues. In the Indian scenario the TRP war has eroded the quality of content on almost all forms of visual media to a sorry state.
