n around 1989 when windows 1.0 came out everything was a bit of a mess. When you turned You turned the computer on usually it would just show a window with a bunch of apps listed in it this continued all the way up until about 1995 when windows 95 came out. When you turned your computer on it would be a clean interface with no window with a list of apps. If you wanted to get to your apps you would press start at the bottom left corner and all your apps would pop up. So the purpose of it was to clear that ugly window that would pop up and show you all the apps and make it a nice organised menu called the start menu.
