we have to find the ratio in which the x - axis divides the line segment LM, where L is (2, 5) and N is (-2, -5).

solution : at X - axis , y = 0.

using section formula,

y = [my₂ + ny₁ ]/(m + n)

here m : n is the ratio in which x - axis divides the line segment LM.

(x₁, y₁) = (2, 5) and (x₂, y₂) = (-2, -5)

so, 0 = [m × -5 + n × 5 ]/(m + n)

⇒0 = (-5m + 5n)/(m + n)

⇒0(m + n)= 5(-m + n)

⇒-m + n = 0

⇒m/n = 1/1

Therefore x-axis divides the line segment LM in the ratio of 1 : 1
