According to the Red Data List of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), there are 48 critically endangered species in India (as of 5 September 2011). The Red List of 2012 was released at the Rio+20 Earth Summit . It contains 132 species of plants and animals in India listed as critically endangered.

This is up from 16,118 last year. This includes both endangered animals and endangered plants. The species endangered include one in four mammals, one in eight birds, one third of all amphibians and 70% of the world's assessed plants on the 2007 IUCN Red List are in jeopardy of extinction.
