Ammonium chloride appears to sublime upon heating but actually decomposes into ammonia and hydrogen chloride gas. Ammonium chloride reacts with a strong base, like sodium hydroxide, to release ammonia gas: NH4Cl + NaOH → NH3 + NaCl + H2O.
