At the first stage when copper reacts with concentrated nitric acid the metal ion coordinates with nitrate ions. This complex gives green color to the solution. The brown gas produced in the reaction is nitrogen dioxide

Nitrogen Oxides and Hydrocarbons

Nitrogen oxides (NO, and to a lesser extent NO2) are released during any high-temperature combustion which breaks the strongly bonded atmospheric N2 and combines atomic N with oxygen: power plants are their largest stationary sources, vehicles and airplanes the most ubiquitous mobile emitters.
