When ester reacts with a strong base like sodium hydroxide, byproducts like soap and ethanol are formed. This is saponification.

Saponification is the alkaline hydrolysis of ester.

It is the reaction where the ester a sweet smelling substance on alkaline hydrolysis forms corresponding sodium aklanoate and corresponding alcohol. On further reaction with an acid as a catalyst, the sodium alkanoate reacts with acid to form carboxylic acis and salt.

This reaction is the oppositeof esterification

RCOOR'-----NAOH----->RCOOH + R'OH
