Answer:

You should not even try to connect an ammeter in parallel to any circuit.

An ammeter measures current, charge flow. The same charge the ammeter is measuring the flow rate of, must be also moving past the ammeter and in your circuit of interest. The purpose of the ammeter is to have a very, very tiny resistance so that when you put it in series in a circuit, it does not alter it much.

If you try to put it in parallel as you write, then you are putting a tiny tiny resistance across your circuit. Another way of stating what you’re doing is saying that you are shorting your circuit. Not good.

If you then finally put your ammeter correctly in series in a circuit including a generator and a light bulb, you will measure the current of the circuit. If the bulb burns out, that means it breaks open and no charge can flow past an open, can it?

So, what will the ammeter measure...

GIVEN -

  • Two resistors of 4Ω and 2Ω
  • Voltage = 6V

To Find -

  • I (current)

Solution -

  • V = IR
  • I = V÷R
  • I = 6 ÷ (4 + 2). (The resistors are in series)

(Total resistance(R) = R1 + R2)

  • I = 6 ÷ 6
  • I = 1 A
